The Wigwam Motel is a legendary pit-stop on America’s Route 66. So much so, that it inspired Disney Pixar to feature it’s own ‘Cozy Cone Motel’ in the movie ‘Cars‘. It is a comfortable hotel conveniently located near the center of Rialto. Built within the city limits of San Bernardino in 1949, the motel’s 19 wigwams make up their own mini village which welcome weary road trippers looking for somewhere a little different to rest up.

From the country that’s home to some of the ‘worlds weirdest hotels’ comes the latest in luxury tourist attractions: The Mirrorcube. Located 60 kilometres south of the Arctic circle, in Harads, Sweden, this stunning hide-out, designed by Tham & Videgard architects, is made of light-weight aluminum which is hung around the base of a single tree.
The Mirrorcube is an exciting hide-out among the trees, camouflaged by mirrored walls that reflect their surroundings. The dimensions are 4x4x4 metres. The base consists of an aluminum frame around the tree trunk and the walls are covered with reflective glass. The windows offer 360 degree views, but to prevent birds from flying into them, an infrared film, visible only to birds, is laminated into the glass panels. The six windows provide a stunning panoramic view. The Mirrorcube offers excellent accommodation for two people with a double bed, bathroom, lounge, and rooftop terrace. A 12-meter-long bridge leads up to the treeroom.
If Sweden’s not your thing, you can have your own Mirrorcube delivered and constructed at your desired destination.

In Austria’s Ottensheim region, you will find Das Park Hotel – three former sewer pipes situated on the banks of the Danube. The beauty of these pipes is that their concrete utilitarian look needs little alteration to make them habitable – a coat of varnish is all that is necessary. The tubes have also have received wall paintings by the Austrian artist Thomas Latzel Ochoa to make them seem a little more user friendly.
